Dear Dr. Jana,
When should I start giving my baby cereal?

Dear Christina,
For healthy babies, the current recommendation is to start iron-fortified baby cereal between the ages of four to six months. In practice, this has meant that many parents think that they must start feeding cereal at four months. Especially for breastfed babies, the reality is that waiting until closer to six months of age can actually be beneficial. A sign that you should consider starting solids...

PARENTS ARE TALKING
 AUTHOR: Chadwick
SUBJECT: Fruits or Vegies
DATE: April 29, 2001

My wife and mother are having a little 'discussion' lately. I've been trying to stay out of it, but thought I'd get some information just in case. Our little girl is 7 months old. She's still breastfeeding and is eating cereal well. We've been talking about starting her on other foods, too. My wife says that she thinks it'd be best to start with vegies so that she doesn't get too interested in sweet stuff and then not WANT vegies. My mother says that in HER day, fruits came next. Anybody have any idea what really should come next? Chad
THIS WEEK'S TIP

As the weather turns warm, consider dressing your infant in long-legged overalls or lightweight pants instead of shorts if he likes to spend his time crawling. Despite the potential for grass stains, it can save him from rug burn or scraped-up knees.
