Dear Dr. Needlman,
My one-month-old niece does not seem to startle at the sound of a ringing phone or a barking dog. She also does not seem to look for where a voice is coming from. She was about three to four weeks premature, and her mom had no prenatal care while pregnant. Is this lack of alertness a cause for concern, or should I wait a little longer before being alarmed?

A Newborn's Appearance
Even after your healthcare provider assures you that your baby is healthy, you may find that he looks a bit odd. Many newborns have some peculiar characteristics. Fortunately, most of them are temporary. Read more here...

I have tried letting her cry it out even if they say not to at this age, but she will just scream forever!!! My son was not like this and I do not know what to do. She will finally...
THIS WEEK'S TIP

If your newborn has dry, peely skin, try not to worry about it, as the condition will go away on its own in due time. Be careful about daily sponge baths, though--too many can actually dry skin out even more.
