Dear Dr. Jana,
How will life change after childbirth? How will my relationship with my spouse change? How will my beliefs and priorities change? How will my time change?

Dear Wondering Mom,
You are clearly thinking about a lot of the important questions that typically face someone as they prepare to enter the world of parenthood. I will be honest right from the start and tell you that having a child really does involve a complete change in your way of life. That said, I also can tell you that the joy a child brings can far outweigh the less welcome adjustments. While I'm sure that you've heard other parents discuss the sleepless nights, the lack of free time, the expense of diapers, and all the other aspects of raising a child, it's still a rare...

Take Care of Yourself
In order to truly attend to all your newborn's needs, you also must take good care of yourself. Before you get over-exhausted, make sure to address your needs and take a little time for yourself.

Rekindling Your Sex Life
At least in the beginning, sex may not be the same after your baby is born. Read on to learn what to expect, as well as how and when to rekindle the passion.

Common New Parent Concerns
Caring for a new baby is not easy. You may find yourself doubting your instincts and worrying about everything from why your baby cries to if she's eating enough. Here is some information to help you get through the early days of parenting.

Whether this is your first or fifth time caring for a newborn, you are bound to get a little overwhelmed occasionally. If you're like most new parents, part of this pressure is likely to come from fearing that you might make a mistake. But as Dr. Spock wrote, "All parents do their best job when they have a natural, easy confidence in themselves. Better to make a few mistakes from being natural than to try to do everything letter-perfect out of a feeling of worry." Keep in mind that being a good parent means taking good care of yourself, too--and asking for help and advice from family and friends when you need it. Why not start right here, on the pages of drSpock.com? We have plenty of articles, Q&As, and message boards to help give you the information and support you need as you get to know your new baby.

PARENTS ARE TALKING
 AUTHOR: danjodi
SUBJECT: Weird grunting and stretching
DATE: February 12, 2002

My 5 month old is developing wonderfully and doing all the things a 5 month old should be doing. However, he does some weird things that make his father and I wonder. For instance, he makes loud grunting noises while stretching his body. Sort of like he is having a bowel movement but he is not. He does this quite often. We thought it might occur when he wants attention or is bored but we're not sure. Has anyone else experienced this?
THIS WEEK'S TIP

After you've had your baby, you are likely to be absolutely exhausted for a time. One key secret of survival: low expectations. Set realistic goals, like getting the baby fed and changed as often as necessary and trying to eat, sleep, and shower when you need to. Notice that the list does not include keeping the house spotless or entertaining guests!
