Ask Dr. Jana

When Babies Cry
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
How do you stop a baby from crying?

— Cap

ANSWER
March 12, 2001
Dear Cap,
This is probably one of the most common questions parents ask. Babies cry for many, many reasons including (but not limited to) hunger, being tired, wanting attention, being over stimulated, because they have colic or constipation, because they are angry or afraid, or because they are sick. You can find more information in our crying section.

What I can tell you for sure is how not to stop a baby from crying -- whether intentionally or unintentionally, no one should ever shake a baby, since shaking can result in significant brain damage.
