Hyperthyroidism and a False Pregnancy Test
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I have just been diagnosed with hyperactive thyroid. My blood test also revealed that I was pregnant. I am about 10 weeks pregnant and have no symptoms at all. Could the test have been wrong due to my hyperactive thyroid?

Dear Woodstock,
If I understand you correctly, you are wondering if your hyperthyroidism might give you a false positive pregnancy test. While this isn't normally the case, there have been some recent reports of false positive blood pregnancy tests. If you did a urine test, it would be accurate, and if you have any question, running a home pregnancy test would give you the real answer. I hope that this answered your question.
