Treating Baby Acne
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
What causes baby acne and what's the best way to treat it?

— Concerned Aunt

ANSWER
October 13, 2000
Dear Concerned Aunt,
Baby acne is thought to occur in part because of exposure to the mother's hormones during pregnancy. Unfortunately, the condition commonly lasts for several months and there's nothing you can do to treat it. Simply use water to clean your niece's skin, and don't apply lotion or baby oil, which can make the acne worse. So can picking at the lesions.

You may take some comfort in knowing that almost a third of babies develop baby acne, and most of them have beautiful baby skin and smiling faces in time for their six-month picture!
