Ask Dr. Jana
Two-Year-Old Nudist | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Jana, My two-year-old daughter will not leave her clothes or diaper on--she is constantly removing them. How can I get her to keep her clothes on? KaKa in St. Louis, MO | | | ANSWER | October 13, 2000 | | | Dear KaKa, Your daughter sounds very talented, since most two-year-olds have a hard time undressing themselves!
However, I understand that this may not be a talent you want to encourage, especially in a public situation like a mall or a restaurant. When you really want her clothes to stay on, try dressing her in overalls, tights, several layers, or some other outfit that is more challenging to take off.
When at home, keep in mind that it is perfectly normal for a child her age to want to run around naked and to feel a sense of accomplishment in disrobing. Let her have a little free time, so to speak, whenever you can.
In fact, depending on her level of interest and ability, this actually may be a good way to introduce her to toilet training. Tell her that it is not acceptable to pee or poop on the floor, and that she needs to either wear her diaper or use the potty. My own daughter learned this way, because as long as she didn't have anything on, she eagerly ran to the potty.
