Still Not Showing Yet
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am already 16-weeks pregnant, but my tummy still doesn't show and I have the feeling that it hasn't grown larger in the previous two weeks. Physically, I feel fine right now, but will there be a risk for my baby?

Dear Worried Mom
It is very common in a first pregnancy not to start to show until around 20 weeks. In subsequent pregnancies, the uterus sticks out earlier since the tummy muscles are not as strong as the first time around and the abdominal wall is stretchier. In either case, you very well might not notice much of a change in any given two-week period.

If you have already started your prenatal care and everything was fine at your last checkup, it's very unlikely that your small size would be a sign of a problem. If you are concerned about the pregnancy, though, I would recommend that you go and see your pracitioner, even if it is not yet time for your next appointment.
