Soy vs.Cow's-Milk Formulas
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Needlman,
There seems to be some disparity between what Dr. Spock's book says about dairy products and the information on this site. We have been feeding our child soy formula since birth based on Dr. Spock's book. Does this site use his name but not uphold his beliefs? Or has new information come to light?

Dear Kina,
Although infant feeding is a controversial area, you can be assured that your baby will be fine drinking a soy formula. While Dr. Spock agreed with other child-care practitioners that breast milk is the preferred food for babies under one year of age, he recognized that soy formula has certain advantages over cow's-milk formulas. There are pros and cons on each side of this issue, and we will be adding more information on this and related topics in our Feeding and Nutrition area.

You're also correct to point out that there are several differences between the latest edition of Baby and Child Care and the advice on our website. Dr. Spock's works are our inspiration and guide, but we also recognize the importance of presenting the most recent research to our members. Dr. Spock always strove to keep up to date and continuously revised his books, so our approach is very much in keeping with his.
