Onset of Puberty in Girls
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My daughter turned 10 years old in October 2001. I would like to know if it is normal for puberty to start. She is developing breasts and quite a bit of pubic hair and is now starting discharging a bit. Is the discharging normal? And does this mean menstruation could start soon? I hope you can help me, as I'm a little concerned. Thank you.

Dear Concerned Mom,
It sounds like you don't feel ready for your daughter to be starting puberty. And yet, the average age for the start of puberty is about age 10, with first menstruation on average at age 12, although two years either way is still normal.

The good news for you is that usually periods don't start until about two years after breast development begins, and clear or white vaginal discharge is normal during that two-year interval. So you have a little time to get used to the idea of puberty and to prepare your daughter for the onset of menstruation. Good luck!
