Non--Binding Foods for Hirshsprung's Disease
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
List a few non-binding foods for children with Hirshsprung's disease.

— Mom and Dad

ANSWER
October 10, 2000
Dear Mom and Dad,
As you probably know, children with Hirshsprung's disease, a condition in which one lacks the nerve cells required to move stool through the colon, need food with a significant amount of fiber. Some good sources include vegetables such as beans, peas, lentils, spinach, broccoli, and avocado. Fruits, such as raspberries, pears, prunes, plums, blueberries, raisins, kiwi, and apples, also have appreciable amounts of fiber. And whole grains, such as oatmeal, whole-wheat bread and crackers, brown rice, and bran and other whole-grain cereals also contain beneficial amounts.

To prevent stomach discomfort, you'll need to gradually increase the amount of high-fiber foods in your child's diet. Also, make sure that he drinks an adequate amount of liquids along with hismeals; that will help move the fiber though the intestines and soften the stool. Be sure to consult with your healthcare provider about the amount of fiber your child should have.
