10-Year-Old with Only One Budding Breast | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, My 10-year-old daughter has developed only one swollen breast bud. It has been over a month and there are no signs of further development yet. She is understandably very concerned about having only one breast, but I can't find any information to soothe her regarding how long it may take for the other to show signs of swelling. Any clues? Breastless in Spring, TX | | | ANSWER | February 8, 2002 | | | Dear Breastless, Good news for you and for your daughter. She will definitely have two breasts! It's quite common for one breast to develop before the other. For now, if she needs a bra, she can wear a stretchy sports-bra type that doesn't have cup sizes, and will even out her appearance.
We don't know why breasts often start off one at a time, but they certainly do. While it's normal for adult breasts to be slightly uneven in size and shape, the one that develops first is not destined to be significantly different from the other. You can expect that within a few months the other breast will start to grow and eventually catch up in size. I hope that this answered your question. Take care. by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
