Ask Dr. Greenfield

Concerned about Eating Feta Cheese
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am six weeks pregnant. Today at lunch I ordered a Greek salad with feta cheese on it. I since have read your article explaining the dangers of this type of cheese. Should I be worried about eating this? It is so hard to know exactly what you shouldn't eat. Thanks.

ANSWER

Dear Josie,
Good news for you! Most soft, imported cheeses are pasteurized, and don't harbor bacteria. So while you should be careful in the future, the chance of anything bad happening from an order of restaurant feta cheese is pretty minimal. If you get a flu-like illness in the next few weeks, be sure to alert your doctor, but otherwise it doesn't sound very high risk to me. Take care!
