Vaginal Discharge While Breastfeeding | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, I've been breastfeeding for almost three months now and my problem is that I have a clear, odorless, vaginal discharge all the time. I definitely do not have a problem with dryness or uncomfortable intercourse because I stay wet all the time. What could this be? Could this be atrophic vaginitis? I need a cure. Please help! Fancy in Beaumont, Texas | | | ANSWER | September 17, 2001 | | | Dear Fancy, Without examining you, it is hard to tell what the problem may be. After childbirth, some women start to make estrogen again before they start to ovulate. This can cause a discharge similar to one seen at the time of ovulation, which has an egg-white consistency. This usually resolves when the hormones get cycling again and menstrual periods resume. If this is your situation, you might find some improvement if you take the progestin-only birth control pill, which is okay to use with breastfeeding.
With a pelvic examination and some tests on the discharge, your practitioner may be able to make a specific diagnosis and then could recommend targeted treatment. It sounds like a trip to your practitioner may be in order. by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
