Visible Groin Lymph Nodes in Young Children
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Cates,
Hi, I took my five-year-old to the doctor after I noticed lymph nodes in her groin area. The doctor said she is thin, so they can be seen. I still worry, although she is in no pain.

Dear Cindy,
It is pretty common to be able to see and feel small lymph nodes in the groin of infants and young children. Usually they feel like dried peas under the skin. If your daughter seems fine--is growing, eating, and exhibiting her usual energy level--and her doctor has checked her out, I doubt there is a problem. The lymph nodes in the groin tend to enlarge a little when there is a cut or infection on the same leg. Since young children are constantly cutting and bumping themselves, their lymph nodes generally are big enough to be seen and felt.

If your daughter looks ill to you, or if these lymph nodes grow, become tender, or if you have any other concerns, you should consult with her doctor again--or with someone else who has a lot of experience with young children.
