Ultrasound Not Conclusive about Baby's Sex
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am 20 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound today, my baby has it's feet up under it's behind, and they said it was hard to tell but that they are 95 percent sure it is a girl. Should I go out and start buying for a girl?

Dear Wanting a Girl,
If the ultrasound team, who was right there, was unwilling to promise you that this is a girl, I certainly can't! Sometimes you just can't tell, especially when they think that it is a girl but aren't sure. I have seen these "girls" surprise their parents at birth!

If you are willing to tolerate a five percent chance that you are telling everyone the wrong sex, go ahead and start announcing (and shopping)--but you may find yourself spending a lot of time returning things to the stores, unless you are willing to cross-dress a son for a few months.

Be patient. You will find out the sex sometime soon and can enjoy all the differences that a girl or boy brings to the family for years to come. Best wishes to you and your baby-to-be.
