Ask Dr. Greenfield

Working during Pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am 24 weeks pregnant and work full-time. When should I stop working?

— Melody in Lodi, CA

ANSWER

Dear Melody,
This is a great question, and of course the answer varies by job and by person. If you are feeling well, and your job can be done safely in pregnancy, it's reasonable to work until your due date or until labor begins. A lot of women wait until labor to take time off, so they don't waste any of their leave before the baby comes. On the other hand, some mothers-to-be are so tired and uncomfortable towards the end of pregnancy that they really can't work full time. It is just too much, and they don't want to start labor in an exhausted state.

I recommend continuing this conversation with your doctor or midwife, so that the answer can be more individualized for your situation. Take care, and good luck!
