Ask Dr. Cates
What is the relationship of your experts to Dr. Spock? | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Cates, What is the relationship of your experts to Dr. Spock? Clyde | | | ANSWER | October 8, 2000 | | | Dear Clyde, One of our co-founders is Mary Morgan, Dr. Spock's widow, who was her husband's valued collaborator during the 23 years of their marriage. She managed his publicity and speaking tours, supervised the publishing of new editions of Baby and Child Care worldwide, and co-authored the memoir Spock on Spock. Another co-founder, Dr. Laura Jana, met Dr. Spock when she was a medical student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he had taught for many years. She became close to him and Mary as a friend and colleague, and served as a consultant on the latest edition of Baby and Child Care.
Like Dr. Spock, Dr. Robert Needlman is a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at Case Western and has worked closely with many of Dr. Spock's colleagues. His training in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics -- a field Dr. Spock helped found -- gives him a strong background in the unique approach to children and families that Dr. Spock so ably championed.
Both as parents and professionals, others on our staff also feel a close kinship with Dr. Spock because we have seen how valuable his work has been to mothers and fathers all over the world. For decades, his warm, common-sense approach to helping parents raise their children has been a model for pediatricians. He is truly our inspiration, and we are excited at the prospect of carrying on the spirit of his work into the 21st century.
