Questions after Hysterectomy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I recently had a vaginal hysterectomy with the removal of my right ovary and tube. Are there any reasons why I should still use birth control? I was under the impression that I could not become pregnant; is this true? I had this done early in September and have not had a period since.

Dear Happy,
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. Whether it is done through an abdominal incision, called an abdominal hysterectomy, or through the vagina, called a vaginal hysterectomy, it permanently prevents you from getting pregnant, and will eliminate your period, since there is no uterine lining to shed. So, you are under the correct impression, provided this was indeed the procedure that was performed.

If you are not sure whether you truly had a hysterectomy, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. You deserve to understand any surgery that was done, and all its implications (like no periods and no pregnancies) for your future. Take care!
