Getting Back in Shape after Four Babies
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
In four years, I have had four children (one set of twins). I am back in shape but my stomach has a fair amount of excess skin. Is there anything specific I can do to help make this disappear? I do exercise regularly (including running and sit-ups).

Dear Rachel,
It sounds like you are taking great care of your body, and have run into an unfair truth--it just isn't the same after four kids, especially twins.

Short of plastic surgery, which would be the most effective approach, abdominal exercises like sit-ups and leg raises, and maintaining a normal body weight are your best options. A personal trainer may be able to advise you about specific exercises for your particular needs. At least you can take some solace in looking at the amazing feats your body has accomplished!

If you do want to consider plastic surgery, an abdominoplasty, where excess tissue is surgically removed, is the procedure that would be done. It is fairly demanding in terms of the recovery, and may not be covered by insurance, since it will probably be considered "cosmetic."

I hope that this answers your question. Take care.
