Pregnant Soon after Being an Egg Donor
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I was an egg donor on September 14, 2001. I just found out that I have become pregnant and am worried about all those hormones I took in August and September. Do I need to worry about the possibility of multiple eggs? My last period was October 2.

Dear Angel,
This is a really interesting question. If I understand correctly--you went through an egg donor cycle, using medications to make a huge number of eggs, and these eggs were given to couples with infertility. After the egg donation, you got a period on October 2, and then you became pregnant on a natural, unmediated cycle.

If you got pregnant in October, there would not be residual effects of the fertility drugs. The only real concern would be if you got pregnant before October 2 and that the "period" you experienced was really early pregnancy bleeding. If this is a possibility, there would be an increased chance that this is a multiple pregnancy. Otherwise, there would not be residual medications in your body, and this gestation would be just like any other naturally occurring pregnancy. Good luck with your pregnancy!
