Curious about Miscarriage at 4½ Months | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, I was pregnant for 4½ months and never showed. I lost the baby and wanted to know if there was a such thing as uterus problems maybe with expansion or something. Darkchyld in Tennessee | | | ANSWER | November 6, 2001 | | | Dear Darkchyld, I can understand your concern. You thought you had gotten all the way through 4½ months of pregnancy, and then found out you had miscarried. The most likely explanation is not that there is something wrong with your uterus, but that since the embryo was destined to miscarry, it wasn't growing properly.
Most miscarriages happen early in the pregnancy, but sometimes the mother doesn't realize it until later. When this happens, often she can look back and realize that her tummy wasn't getting big because the embryo was not growing. Sometimes she also can remember that her pregnancy symptoms disappeared at some point.
When you lose a pregnancy, it can be really awful. You feel grief over the loss, and worried about why it occurred. If your loss was as it sounds, a first trimester miscarriage that wasn't diagnosed until the second trimester, you most likely will have a normal healthy pregnancy the next time around.
If you still have unanswered questions, ask your doctor for more information about why you might have miscarried and what it means about your uterus and your ability to carry a pregnancy in the future. by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
