Tipped Uterus and Menstrual Cramps | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, I have a tipped uterus and was wondering how this affects my menstrual cycles. I have severe cramping and take Vioxx, which only takes the edge off the pain. Could a tipped uterus cause severe cramping? CCM in Coventry, RI | | | ANSWER | November 6, 2001 | | | Dear CCM, I don't think your tipped uterus is the cause of your symptoms. Menstrual pain is very common, and can be very severe. This can be true for women with a uterus tipped up, the most common position, or tipped back, like yours. About 15 percent of women have a uterus in the tipped back or retroverted position.
Most women with severe menstrual pain get relief from taking medicines in the ibuprofen (Mortin, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox) family, or related drugs like Vioxx. If that isn't adequate, birth control pills sometimes make all the difference in the world. If these steps don't give relief, other causes of pain are possible, such as endometriosis or adenomyosis. Your doctor can help you figure out if you need further evaluation for these conditions.
I hope that this answered your questions. Take care. by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
