Ask Dr. Greenfield

Treating colds during pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
What over-the-counter medications can I take for a cold while I am pregnant?

— 9/10/00 Stuffed up and miserable

ANSWER

For nasal congestion, Sudafed® is generally considered to be okay as long as blood pressure is normal. All the Robitussin® medications are usually considered to be safe as well. Tylenol® is fine for treating fever, and practitioners are generally in favor of treating fever during pregnancy, since high body temperatures are not good for the baby.
