Hand and foot swelling
QUESTION
Is it normal for my hands and feet to swell?

— 9/10/00 Jennifer in Ohio

ANSWER
September 28, 2000
Hand puffiness and some foot swelling is certainly a normal occurrence at the end of pregnancy. If your hands get quite swollen, its important to take any rings off to prevent them from getting stuck. If your hands or feet are swollen and you have high blood pressure, it can be a sign of developing pre-eclampsia.

See our articles on swollen feet, pregnancy induced hypertension, and the evaluation and treatment of pre-eclampsia for more information.
