Pubic Bone Pain in Pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I wrote earlier and asked about low pain on my cervix bone and got something about low back pain. I have no back pain and was wondering if the pain I am having is a sign of preterm labor. I can't lift my legs more than about six inches off the ground because it really hurts and hardly ever goes away! Please send me an answer. Thank you.

Dear TazCrazyTaz,
Your symptoms sound miserable, and I am sure they are preventing you from having a normal life right now. I can't be sure from your short description, but you may be describing what we call an unstable symphysis.

The symphysis pubis is the part of the pubic bone where the two halves of your pelvic girdle meet in the front. There is a section of cartilage between the bones there, and the joints can become unstable, possibly due to effects from the hormones of pregnancy. Generally, symphysis pain slowly resolves after childbirth.

On the other hand, internal pelvic pressure and pain can indeed be a sign of preterm labor. I don't know how far along you are in the pregnancy, but if you haven't seen a doctor for this discomfort, you should be seen as soon as possible.
