Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease
QUESTION
I just heard that two boys down the street have hand, foot and mouth disease. Isn't that a disease of cattle?

— Russ of San Jose, CA

ANSWER

Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease is a common summertime infection in children. It usually is caused by coxsackievirus A16 or other enteroviruses, and results only in mild illness with fever and a rash that appears mainly on the hands, feet and inside the mouth. No specific treatment is available, but the disease ordinarily resolves completely within a few days.
