Short Labor with First Baby
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I was induced with Cervidal and had a 1½ hour hip labor for my first child; it was not what I expected and was very traumatic. How common is hip labor and am I likely to have another fast labor even if I am not induced for my second delivery?

Dear Hip Labor Mom,
I'm not sure what you mean by hip labor, but it sounds like you felt most of the pain in your hip or hips. While back labor is associated with the baby facing up (occiput posterior), I don't know what the cause of hip pain in labor would be, so I can't really address where you'll feel your contractions the next time around.

You did have a remarkably short labor with your first baby, and that does indicate the likelihood of rapid labor again, whether or not you are induced. Actually, induction usually makes labor longer than it would have been! And as you say, rapid labor, while it sounds appealing to "get it over with," can be very overwhelming. You're in transition before you even have a chance to adjust to being in labor.

Unfortunately, it may actually make sense to induce labor again this time, only so you can be sure to make it to the hospital! Talk to your practitioner about your options. Good luck!
