Sources for Earliest Memories
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Needlman,
In your recent article "Digging into Your Personal Past," you stated "More recently, several psychologists have developed systems for analyzing early memories as a form of personality assessment." Could you please provide the names of these psychologists and references to their scientific publications on this work? If possible, I would prefer to have this information emailed to me rather than posting it on the drSpock.com website. Thank you.

Dear Academic Doc,
The best source for an overview of this research is:

Arnold R Bruhn, Earliest Childhood Memories. Volume 1: Theory and Application to Clinical Practice(1990) New York: Praeger.

You might also look at:

Bruce M Ross. Rembmering the Personal Past: Descriptions of Autobiographical Memory (1991) New York: Oxford University Press.

also:

Mark L Howe. The Fate of Early Memories: Developmental Science and the Retention of Childhood Experiences (2000) Washington, DC: The American Psychological Association.

and

Ulric Neisser and Robyn Fivush (editors). The Remembering Self: Construction and Accuracy in the Self-Narrative (1994) Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univeristy Press.

(Although you asked me to respond directly, it's our policy at The Dr. Spock Company to respond to all inquiries publicly, so that the greatest number of people can benefit. Thanks for asking the question!)
