Ask Dr. Greenfield

Not Pregnant after Three Years
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My husband and I have been having unprotected sex for the last three years. I still am not pregnant. What am I doing wrong?

— Rachel in York, Pa

ANSWER

Dear Rachel,
There is probably nothing you are doing wrong, but you are clearly having a difficult time getting pregnant.

Under normal circumstances most couples are able to get pregnant within one year. Out of those that are not able to, about half conceive in the following year. You have been very patient! It is now time to consult a physician to see why you have not conceived and to get help speeding up the process. Good luck!
