Taking Synthroid during Pregnancy
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I have recently had a thyroidectomy and I am on Synthroid. Will it affect my ability to conceive?

— Toby

ANSWER
June 21, 2001
Dear Toby,
Synthroid is one of the most commonly used medications for women in the reproductive years. It is one of the few drugs that falls into category A meaning that there is evidence to suggest that it is safe for women to take during pregnancy. Although hyper- and hypothyroid states can interfere with ovulation, once you are replaced appropriately, your fertility should be normal.

The only potential issue is why you had the thyroidectomy in the first place. Please ask your doctor whether there are any concerns about conception or pregnancy based on your previous thyroid condition.

I hope this answers your questions. Good luck to you.
