Excessive Fear of Miscarriage
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am currently 18 weeks pregnant. The fear of a miscarriage is with me every day. I know that this is probably just me being paranoid, but what are the chances of a miscarriage when I am this far along?

Dear Worried,
You are probably worrying unnecessarily. While no one can promise you a successful pregnancy and healthy baby, the risk of miscarriage after the first trimester is in the one percent range--hardly something to get too hung up on if you have no risk factors.

If this doesn't reassure you, talk to your practitioner about your concerns. Worrying is part and parcel of normal pregnancy, but if you are obsessing over such an unlikely event, you may need some help coping with stress or identifying what is really on your mind.

Take care of yourself and your baby-to-be.
