Father Taking Meds when Mother Conceived
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My girlfriend overseas got pregnant by me while I was visiting her. I am currently taking Cardizem Blood Pressure Meds, Alprazolam, Buspar, Isorsobide and Zocor for cholesterol. Could any of these meds I am taking affect the baby? Also, her blood type is B- and I am A+, how is the compatibility? Thanks for your assistance.

Dear Joe,
It is nice to see a father-to-be already concerned about the welfare of his baby. And I have good news for you--there are very few drugs that a father can take that would affect the baby. None of the medications you are on would be expected to cause any problems as long as the mom doesn't take them while she is expecting.

As for your question about blood types--see our article on Rh negative mothers. Congratulations and best wishes.
