Late Period and Not Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My last period started March 6, 2001. I have not had one since (today is 5/23). I have taken a home test and been to the doctor but the both say negative. Is there any thing else I need to do or is something wrong?

Dear Worried,
There are lots of reasons that your period could be delayed. If you are not pregnant, the most likely cause of a late period is hormonal--you are not ovulating or ovulating irregularly.

Amenorrhea, or absent periods, is defined as three to six months without menstruating. If it gets to that point or if you are having any other symptoms or medical problems, you should see your doctor for an evaluation. If you get a period before then, you may want to keep a record of your cycles so you will know if they get off track again, and you can then show the record to your doctor at your annual examination.

Don't forget, if you are trying to conceive, to take a folate supplement every day. If your ovulations are irregular, you never know when you may become pregnant.
