Whole Milk for Poor Eaters
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
My five-year-old daughter is petite and weighs 34 pounds. She is very active. She is a poor eater, but loves to drink milk. My question is should she drink low fat or skim milk?

Dear Judy,
Children who are poor eaters and/or underweight can often benefit from the extra calories they get drinking whole milk. Although your daughter loves milk, she might eat better if she did not drink any milk for at least one hour before a meal. Then give her milk only after she has eaten some of her meal. Limiting milk to twenty-four ounces a day will provide her with adequate calcium while allowing her to be hungry for other foods.
