Getting a Toddler to Eat Veggies and Other Healthy Things
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
My son just turned a year old. He was 10 pounds 1 ounce when he was born, and he is still a very "healthy" size for his age. I'm concerned about his nutrition though. He eats plenty, but it is always a battle getting him to eat the foods I would like him to, such as veggies and lean meats. Do you have any suggestions for how to let him know that they are tasty?

Dear The Big Guy's Momma,
After the first year of life, babies begin to grow more slowly and therefore don't need quite as much to eat. Your son may be turning down some food because his appetite has naturally decreased.

Instead of battling with him to eat foods that are good for him all the time, you might try giving these foods when he's the hungriest--at the beginning of the meal and before you serve other foods he prefers. Of course, you also can use these foods for snacks. And remember, the best way to show him these foods are tasty is for you and the rest of the family eat them as well. Good luck!
