Giving Infant Milk Right Out of the Fridge
QUESTION
Dear Ms. Silva,
Can an eight-month-old drink milk right out of the fridge?

— None in Newark , NJ

ANSWER
August 3, 2001
Dear None,
First of all, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics infants less than a year old should drink either breast milk or iron fortified formula. Cow's milk is not recommended for babies less than a year old because it may cause gastrointestinal bleeding or trigger an allergic reaction. Cow's milk also contains too little iron and other nutrients for the rapidly growing bodies of babies. Secondly, yes, infants can tolerate breast milk or formula straight out of the refrigerator at any age. It's quite convenient in the middle of the night!
