Egg Allergy in a One-Year-Old | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Ms. Silva, My one-year-old is allergic to eggs. Her eyes swell shut and she gets hives and is very irritable. She just recently started eating table foods but now seems to be breaking out in hives. I can't put my finger on what is causing it because the ingredients don't list eggs. What are other names they use for egg parts in food? I feel so sorry for her. It breaks my heart. Please help if you can. My doctor doesn't want to do allergy tests--didn't explain to me why. He just said she could out grow it and to keep her from eating eggs. Stressed Out in Watertown | | | ANSWER | July 20, 2001 | | | Dear Stressed Out, Skin irritation caused by food allergies can be quite uncomfortable. You're right to be suspicious of the words used on the ingredient lists of food labels. Some terms that might be seen on a label that indicate egg include: albumin, globulin, livetin, lecithin, ovalbumin, ovomucoid and ovovitellin.
Since it's quite common for children to have an allergy to more than one food, be sure to report to your doctor any additional episodes of hives, respiratory problems, or vomiting that occur after completely eliminating all sources of egg. by Mary Silva, M.S., R.D. |
