Using a Vibrator When Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
This is an embarrassing question, but I have difficulty having an orgasm and usually use a vibrator to aid in our sexual intimacy. I was wondering if a vibrator is OK to use during pregnancy. Thank you.

Dear Frustrated Mom-to-Be,
I am so glad that you asked this question! Many women (and men) worry about sexual activities during pregnancy but are too embarrassed to ask.

Good news for you--there is no evidence of any risk from using a vibrator for sexual pleasure during a healthy low-risk pregnancy. And there are many benefits to maintaining closeness and intimacy in whatever ways please both the mom- and the dad-to-be. In some high-risk pregnancies, intercourse or female orgasm may pose some risk. Ask your practitioner if there are any restrictions on your sex life if you are not sure.

For more information, see our articles on sex and pregnancy.
