In Vitro Fertilization | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, I had two ectopic pregnancies, which resulted in both my tubes being removed. At the time, I did not feel bothered because I had a one-year-old daughter. Now she is 10, and I really miss not having a son. I am now 32, and I am desperate to get pregnant again. Please help. Desperate for a Son in Brooklyn, NY | | | ANSWER | May 9, 2001 | | | Dear Desperate for a Son, In vitro fertilization was invented for problems like yours. With IVF, the egg and sperm are put together in the lab, and the early embryo is replaced into your uterus through the cervix, bypassing the fallopian tubes. While there are never any guarantees, it sounds (from the information you provided) that you would have a good chance for success.
IVF is very expensive. If the cost is prohibitive for you, some programs will allow you to offset the expense by sharing some of your eggs with another infertile woman who needs them. If this is acceptable to you, you may want to ask about it when you start looking at programs.
Talk to your doctor about IVF. For more information, you can also look at the web site for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine at www.asrm.org. by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
