Fevers Related to Teething
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
My daughter is 9-1/2 months old. She has had a fever for the past 24 hours. I thought it was because she is cutting a tooth. But her temperature is now 102.5. Is this from teething or something else?

Dear Worried Mom,
While I can tell you that studies don't support the notion that teething causes low-grade fever in infants, many parents (and some pediatricians) convince themselves otherwise. Without jumping into the middle of this longstanding debate, I can tell you that pretty much all children's health care providers are in agreement that true fevers--such as the one your daughter has at 102.5 degrees--are not caused by teething.

If you are interested in finding out more about fever in nine-month-olds, please see our related fever article entitled Fever: Nine Months to Three Years.
