Afraid to Test
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
My husband and I have been trying to conceive for three years. I am currently five days late and afraid to test. I have been having some weird symptoms that I think may be signs. My question is: Is diarrhea a symptom of early pregnancy or did I eat something bad? Thank you!

Dear Upset for Years,
I can certainly understand being afraid to run a pregnancy test even though your period is late. You have waited and tried for a very long time, and you are afraid to hope. While some women do notice loose bowel movements in early pregnancy, it is not that common a pregnancy symptom. If you still have not gotten your period, a home pregnancy test or a trip to the doctor is in order. Good luck!
