Ask Dr. Greenfield
Learning about Lamaze | | | QUESTION | | | Dear Dr. Greenfield, I am from India, and I am desperate to know more about Lamaze. Internet fails to come up with how Lamaze exercises are actually done. It just talks about the basic theory about it. I have no birth centre where I can get to enroll for these exercises, so please tell me how to do them. I am six months along with my second. Sandra in Margao, Goa, India | | | ANSWER | May 9, 2001 | | | Dear Sandra, Breathing and relaxation exercises, as well as other comfort measures like taking a shower or getting massaged, can really help you cope with the discomforts of labor. While specifics of breathing and relaxation exercises are beyond our scope at present, we do have some information about emotional support from a doula during labor. Even if you don't have a trained doula available, a woman with a reassuring personality who wants to give you encouragement during labor may be just as effective for you.
The International Childbirth Education Association has a web site with lots of resources for you about specific techniques, at www.ICEA.org. They have video and audio tapes and reviews of lots of books you can purchase and practice with. Good luck to you! by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D. |
