Ask Dr. Greenfield

Afraid of Another Miscarriage
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
Hello. I had two miscarriages in the past, and after four years I am again pregnant. I am very worried and afraid. Can you suggest precautions I should take this time and also tell me about diet recommendations and other things please.

Dear Rachu,
I can understand your worries--you have waited a long time for this baby! The good news for you--and for most people who have had one or two first trimester miscarriages--is that your chance of having a healthy baby is much greater than your chance of losing the pregnancy again. While there is never any guarantee that a pregnancy will go well, it is most likely that by nine months from now, you will have given birth to a healthy baby.

There is nothing special to do at this point, except see your doctor or midwife early in the pregnancy so she can check on you. Good luck!
