Pus-Filled Bumps on Genital Area and Hands
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Cates,
My seven-year-old son has several small pus filled bumps on his genital area and a couple on the back of his hand. What do you think this could be and how do we treat it? Thank you, a concerned parent.

— David S. in Panama City Fl.

Dear David,
It's difficult to know what is causing your son to have this rash without seeing it (and even then sometimes it is hard to know!). One of the most common causes of pus-filled bumps that look like pimples is a staph infection of the skin. Usually the "sores" caused by the staph germ have red bases and are tender. Although mild staph infections occasionally go away on their own, they often require treatment with antibiotics.

Since there are many other potential causes for this kind of rash, you should have it checked out by your child's healthcare provider.
