Conceiving with Irregular Periods
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I'm 26 years old, married, and am trying to conceive for the first time. However, my periods are not regular. I have cycles varying from 28 days to 66 days (as has happened now). I was prescribed 'Fertyle' to regularize my periods but of no avail. Then I was given 'Modus-10' containing Medroxyprogesterone-Acetate (U.S.P. 10 gm) to induce periods but again of no avail. Scan showed no sac in the uterus and a small follicle in the ovary. I desperately want to conceive. Help.

Dear Desperate Mom,
Wanting a baby can make you feel desperate, but take heart--of all the reasons people can have difficulty getting pregnant, irregular ovulation is the easiest to treat. And with such irregular periods, you are correct to think you may need fertility drugs to help you conceive.

A gynecologist can evaluate your fertility and get you started on the right medications, or you may choose to see a fertility specialist. I am not sure where you are, but in the United States, you can ask your doctor for a referral to a fertility specialist, or you can find one through the website of the society for reproductive medicine at www.asrm.org.

If you want more information, look at our article called Trying to Conceive. Good luck!
