Strollers for Newborns
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Jana,
I'm going to have my first baby in three weeks. I wanted to know if it's okay to go on walking with the baby sitting in a special car seat that connects to the stroller. Nowadays they have lots of models of strollers with this kind of attachments. Is this position good for a newborn or is better to have a carriage?

Dear Michal,
Congratulations (in advance) on your new baby! I think it is wonderful that you plan to get some exercise and go for walks with your baby. I would recommend to any new moms who might want to get out for a walk that they talk to their obstetricians about how much rest and time to recover they should give themselves after the birth of the baby.

Using a car seat that is designed for a newborn and attaches to the stroller should be fine when it comes to taking a newborn out for a walk - as long as you take into account a few considerations:

  • That the seat is, in fact, designed for use by a newborn

  • Make sure your baby is always buckled up - whether in the car or in the stroller

  • Provide some extra head support (a specifically designed head support or a towel roll) to keep your baby's head from being jerked about

  • Dress your baby appropriately for the weather. In addition to the right clothes, it's a good idea to keep a newborn's head covered.

  • Keep your baby out of direct sunlight whenever possible - newborns burn easily

  • Limit your strolls to smooth sidewalks and avoid the potholes or off-road adventures.
