Feeling Pregnancy Symptoms a Few Days after Conception
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
Is it possible to feel morning sickness a few days after conception?

— Veteran

ANSWER
April 2, 2001
Dear Veteran,
Stories abound of moms who knew they were pregnant at the moment of conception. Hormonally, though, this doesn't make much sense. The hormones of early pregnancy are the same as the hormones we have late in the menstrual cycle. The pregnancy hormones don't start to build until a few days before the missed period.

Most women do not start having nausea until five or six weeks from their last menstrual period. Some women who experience the nausea early turn out to be further along in the pregnancy than expected. So check your pregnancy test and check your dates. And if you need help with your symptoms, see our article on morning sickness.
