Eighty Percent Sure It's a Girl
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
I am 27 weeks pregnant and was recently told at an ultrasound that the baby was 80 percent a girl. Should I be assuming this to be correct or is this still not completely accurate?

— Curious George in Canada

ANSWER
April 2, 2001
Dear Curious George,
Ultrasound and the resultant early news that "it's a boy" or "it's a girl" has become so commonplace that many of us have come to equate having an ultrasound with finding out the sex of the baby. Unfortunately, sometimes the baby is not positioned for an optimal view of the genitals.

I am sorry to tell you that if they told you "80 percent" a girl, it meant that they were not certain. Unless you need another ultrasound for some reason, you are probably going to have to wait to find out the sex of your baby the old fashioned way.

Good luck with little George or Georgina--whichever he/she is!
