Sigmoidoscopy while Pregnant
QUESTION
Dear Dr. Greenfield,
Is there any danger in having a sigmoidoscopy while pregnant? My doctor is recommending this to monitor my colitis.

— Pooh in Detroit

ANSWER

Dear Pooh,
Since sigmoidoscopy can be done without medications and without radiation, there is no reason to avoid it in pregnancy. In general, what is good for the mother is best for the baby as well--so, take good care of yourself and your baby-to-be and have the sigmoidoscopy, if that is what your doctor is recommending.
